One spring afternoon during the Belle Époque, the paths of an Italian lady and an English gentleman crossed at the Reber International bookshop in Palermo.
Maria, a nurse, cared for patients suffering from pellagra at Treviso hospital. George, a wine merchant from Manchester, had spent the early years of his career travelling through England, Spain, and Italy.
